If you do not have a real tripod handy, strat (Yahoo!, Panasonic forum, 10 March 2004) has a suggestion...
I also carry a length of cord in my small camera bag. I rarely use it because I tend to forget I have it, but the technique is to wrap one end around your hand that will hold the camera. Drop the other end of the string, step on it and then pull up so the string is taunt. Almost, just almost, like using a monopod.
