Canon TL-55 (3.0x variant)

The TL-55 also comes in a 3.0x telephoto variant (as well as the more common, and cheaper, 1.4x). Tes `Tels' (who has an FZ2) reports (dpreview, Panasonic forum, 8 April 2004)...

One does not attach the TL-55 to the FZ2, one does attach the FZ2 to the TL-55. It is 60mm in diameter, with 55m threads that fit the FZ2 perfect. On the other hand it has (I guess) 58 mm threads. The lens is black, and does not flare out (e.g. is a tube).

It is very heavy (560 gr!) and about 15cm long!

It fits perfectly and secure to the plastic adapter of the FZ2 (after I already sanded it down for the TCON17).

However, due to the weight, to carry it around you will grab the lens and carry it in one hand, while the fz2 simple hangs on one end. Shooting is best done with one hand holding the lens, and the other the camera (like the TCON17). I prefer the right hand for the FZ2.

The magnification is impressive: 3 times means you get 36 times optical zoom!

There is also a manual zoom ring on the lens, and this is needed: the DOF {depth of field} is quite shallow with that long zoom and the FZ2 could not compensate for that. With the manual zoom ring you can `pre-focus' and the rest is done by the auto-focus.

The lens eats a fair bit of light, it sunny (but not bright) weather I got with 2.8 about 1/100 shutter, without the lens I got about 1/250. Optical quality seems good, equal or better than the TCON17 (even with the increased magnification). There was quite some CA {chromatic aberration}, but I had to fight a low-standing sun.

Bird hunting with that setup is a joy, although I missed about 80% of the shots because I could not achive focus quickly enough, or didn't find the little bugger in the view.
Other users report that the pictures taken with the TL-55 (3.0x) attached to a FZ-10 are very soft (poor detail). As of April 2004, the TL55 (3.0x) costs about $Euros511. It is difficult to find, but can be found at fotokoch.
